Springs Splash Surprise in Jinan, the City of Springs

On October 19th in Jinan, there was a Springs Splash Surprise. Expats from 42 countries, who are currently living in China, had the chance to gather together in Jinan and experience the ancient city. Jinan city, the capital city of Shandong Province, is a place everyone should not miss for their first trip in China. With its growing international presence, Jinan city is best known as the City of Springs with 733 springs and the Daming (pronounced Dah-Ming) Lake, which is full of spring water. Jinan city is a Nexus of the traditional Chinese culture, most notably of Confucius and The Art of War. Travelling to Jinan takes at most 1.5 hours, via the high speed train, from Beijing.

The event started in the morning from Quancheng Square. Over 100 expats joined altogether and screamed out to the words “Hello Jinan!”

The next stop was the Five Dragon Pool.There was the possibility to walk between creeks flowing above the stones, to play with water, to enjoy the turbulence of the fishes swimming around, and to visit the Qin Qiong Temple. QinQiong was a famous general during the Tang Dynasty and now is remembered as a door god to banish evil spirit, suppress fierce evil and bless peace. “I have been to Jinan before, but this is the first time I´ve come to Five Dragon Pool. Quite fun”, said one of travelers from Sierra Leone, who is teaching in a kindergarten in Qingdao. A lot of pictures were taken in front of the Qin Qiong’s statue.

Fuxue Wenmiao, popularly known as the Confucian Temple of Shandong Province, lies between the Daming Lake Park and the Furong Street. It shows the ancient worship of Confucius’ Confucianism. People started to see young kids learn calligraphy and ancient characters, and they also got the opportunity to practice the art of rubbing, an ancient Chinese traditional technique.

In Baihuazhou Area one did not only watch ancient Jinan movies and buy special handcrafts, but even joined the table with the locals playing card games together.

In the evening, all people came together for a session of sharing their impressions about Jinan. Everyone was able to participate in the lucky draws and talent show, winning extraordinary prizes and making it the highlight of the day. Afterwards English Song “To Jinan” was played on a big screen, which was created for Jinan city by a Xingxing Star band consisting of six singers from different countries. Everyone joined in with singing this song and over 100 travelers sang together:

- Go on a boat, ride, cruise down the river

“Jinan is a very nice city. I am willing to be a volunteer of the Global Volunteer Promoter for Jinan Cultural and Tourism, and promote Jinan as well”, said Lisa, an English-Language teacher from Beijing. She heard before about the many springs in Jinan and was very curious to experience them this time.
